Did you know that October is non-GMO month? As the organic, non-GMO snack choice for thousands of families, that’s a pretty big deal for us!
Non-GMO Month was created by the Non-GMO Project to celebrate the annual harvest and raise awareness about the importance of food awareness, particularly when it comes to GMOs. Continue reading below to learn more about what exactly non-GMO means and how you can pass on this knowledge to your children so they can make healthy food choices for themselves later in life.
What Are GMOs?
According to the non-profit organization the Non-GMO Project, “Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.”
In Canada, the presence of GMOs in food does not require specific labels by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as it is required in other countries. In the absence of credible long-term studies on the safety of GMOs, many consumers (including our team at DeeBee’s!) are actively searching for products that refrain from GMO ingredients.
Tips for Educating Your Kids About GMOs
Depending on your child's age, explaining the development of GMOs can seem overwhelming. To begin the conversation, we recommend explaining the types of foods that have fueled our bodies for centuries. Explaining food in this way makes it easier to explain why certain foods today are different from what they were years ago (even if they seem the same!).
Once your child understands the importance of GMOs, parents can begin to explain the choices families can make to discourage the use of GMOs and fuel bodies in natural ways. Focusing on cooking, growing and harvesting non-GMO foods are all great to get your children involved in making decisions about the food your family eats daily. For older children, parents may choose to share specific information about the types of crops that are genetically modified. These crops include corn, canola, cottonseed, sugar beets, soybeans, alfalfa, apples, papaya, potatoes, yellow squash and zucchini.
