It’s that time of year, where school and holidays and everyone else’s needs can start to drown out your own. We’re a few months into the school year, and you’ve probably got your routine down pat by now (hopefully these time saving hacks for busy moms have helped). But ask yourself: does your routine include any self-care?
We’re proud to be a certified women-owned business, with 68% of our team identifying as women. And many of those women are moms! In fact, our founder Dr. Dionne Laslo-Baker started DeeBees while raising children. So we know all too well how easy it can be to let self care slip, especially in the winter.
So here’s our word-to-the-wise: don’t let it slip. Self-care is so important. If you need a little inspiration, here’s some of our favourite tips for practising self-care in the winter.
Eat Well
When the weather gets cold, we like to cuddle up on the couch with something tasty. But that doesn’t mean healthy eating needs to go out the window. You know you feel better when you eat better, so taking care of your overall health is just about the best self-care there is.
So follow our tips to cut sugar without sacrificing joy (it is possible, we promise!). If you need something warm in your mug, reach for tea or an organic Blume latte instead of something artificially sweeter. If you need something crunchy, we love fresh veggies or organic and non-GMO Late July chips. And if you need something sweet, check out our recipe for vegan strawberry lemon muffins.
And don’t forget that when it comes to self-care, a couple of SuperFruit Freezies can go a long way!
Sleep Well
We bet you insist that your children get the sleep their bodies need. But what about you? Are you prioritizing your own sleep? If not, try to. Trust us – it’s one of the nicest things you’ll ever do for yourself.
Meditate
Meditating is probably something that’s on your ‘should do’ list. Can you move it to your ‘must do’ list? Don’t be intimidated. Meditating has become quite buzz-worthy, but it doesn’t have to be a time-consuming, big thing. It’s totally ok to start slowly! Begin by taking a few mindful breaths before you get out of bed in the morning, and a few before you go to bed each night. You might be surprised by what a difference this makes.
Carve Out ‘ Me Time’
Similarly, we highly recommend that you carve out some time early in the morning or late at night, while everyone else is asleep. Maybe you’ll use this time for meditating, maybe you’ll use it for stretching, maybe you’ll use it for rocking out to 90’s jams. The important thing is to make sure you’re setting aside time every day to spark joy.

Spark Joy With Your Kids
There’s likely nothing that makes you happier than your children. But when you’re a busy parent with a busy schedule, it’s easy to lose the forest for the trees. When you’re an overworked chauffeur, cook, cleaner, and personal shopper, you might be missing out on the most important self-care of all: real quality time with your kids.
So try to find time where you can put the phones down and let the to-do list slide, so you can focus on what matters to you most. We’ve already shared 5 ideas to create moments of joy with your kids if you’re looking for some inspiration to get started. A hint: you only need 10 minutes to create magic!
